This is a collection of upcoming events for juniors/school age chess players. As well as the Hamilton Chess Club Rookies Shield (for juniors and adult alike), there are other events in the Waikato and beyond that would appeal to different chess playing strengths, just for school age and up to under 20s.

Waikato Schools Team Event, 20 May, Southall School, Hamilton 2014
This is the qualifying event for Waikato schools to enter the National Interschools team event. More details to follow.
Waikato School Pupils Tournament, 29 July at St Pauls Collegiate, Hamilton 2014
Three divisions: High school; Intermediate; Primary Entry fee: $10 Registration and entry fees are due 2 weeks beforehand. Late entry fee $15.

Hi there, my boy has been playing chess over a year and he is now year 6. He wants to find out his chess skills by joining some competitions. Since the tournament is in school hours, does it mean all pupil applicants will be registered with their schools instead of applying on this website ourselves? It’s our first time joining tournaments, would be nice if you could point me in the direction. Thank you
